We encourage children to become passionate about the arts and creative expression. Students take one or more art classes every day. More than a third of our faculty teaches an art class, and we have an impressive array of courses. On offer are electives in: music, theatre, dance, painting and drawing, ceramics, fiber arts, photography, film, stagecraft and woodshop.
Our location provides endless opportunities for adventure and exploration. So much of what we do we do out of doors. Every afternoon and weekend, students play various sports, horseback ride, ski, rock climb and learn wilderness skills on hiking and camping trips. Our outdoor offerings encourage children to take safe risks, acquire new skills and gain confidence.
9th grade at NCS is a year of mastery, specialization and contribution. Our 9th grade teachers and advisors design engaging curriculum and travel and leadership opportunities that allow students to make critical strides in responsibility and independence. Our 9th graders enjoy a year of academic challenge and personal growth while working closely with our secondary school placement team to prepare for 10th grade and beyond.
Our farm and extensive gardens provide opportunities for hands-on and meaningful experiences that teach children indelible life lessons. Students learn to care for a variety of animals and how to plant, harvest and cook their own food. In addition to our farm and garden curriculum, our math, science, English and even art departments integrate farm and garden experiences into their classes.
For a full week at the end of winter term, students in grades 4-8 take only elective courses designed to inspire new passions, build new skills and stretch imaginations. Intersession allows our multi-talented teachers to offer half and full-day art, science, outdoor education, and service opportunities. Guest instructors come to campus to lead workshops. The week culminates with an evening exhibition that showcases our students’ talents and creativity. During this time, the 9th grade takes their annual trip.
